QuaxiDanto

QuaxiDanto: If you speak K'ekchi, you know what it means, but don’t understand. K'ekchi is a Mayan dialect spoken in, among other places, Belize. I made several extended trips into the high bush in southern Belize at the end of the last century with a bunch of K'ekchis who gave me the nickname Danto, which means Tapir. That name had been taken so I added the modifier Quaxi, which means crazy. What does CrazyTapir mean as far as the title of my blog? Whatever!

I am an enigmatic anachronism, facing the world jaded and uncomfortably impressed. My chosen profession is archaeology, which turns out to be way more tedious than cool. I race yachts, hang with the bohemian artist crowd, and vacation at ancient Maya cities. Its no wonder I usually feel out of place, and am oh-so-pleased to be different (even if it is not in a good way). Why TOC?: I was participating through emails in a call-in radio show that didn’t accept phone calls (it’s college radio, which covers a multitude of sins). The host had a friend named Chuck who also wrote into the show so they started referring to me as “the other Chuck.” I started signing my emails TOC (The Other Chuck). A little later I started posting to a blog that was running live during the next program in the lineup and then a couple of other places and have just kind of stuck with it as a screen name. Again, whatever dude.

Inside Outside Gallery

I saw some great music at the Tremont Artwalk. Not a lot of good art, but whatever. Saint Andrew played the Doubting Thomas. As always, an emotional performance, although I think he is starting to roach out his voice a little. Still it is always a true performance. There are just no going-through-the-motions shows for him. The Inside Outside Gallery also had a show that night. It was experimental stuff. Very percussive and spacey at the beginning and a little more normal format tunes from a four piece that headlined the show. I of course didn’t know any of the acts and cannot remember names. But I can say it was one of the best shows, or maybe the show that I enjoyed the best, in a long time. Erin is running a great place, art sells, the press shows up (like real TV news press), and the movie and bands, etc. are always interesting.

About the TV news, the last show was a burn victim's art therapy pieces, several of which were actually pretty good for somebody who is not trained and basically had her hand burned off. It is Georgia O’Keeffe inspired stuff. So anyway, the TV news apparently gets wind of the show and Erin said that unbeknownst to her, they were coming to the gallery to interview her. She said she was dressed like a hobo, but had no chance to get cleaned up before they showed. I didn’t see any of the news footage, it aired during the show that night and I didn’t make it home until well after midnight, but I found the whole thing funny and thought I would share.
